How To Work With A Handyman

What is a Handyman?

A handyman is defined as a person that can do the job or jobs you need done around your home.

A handyman is not capable of doing everything… pressuring a handyman to do work he is not comfortable with may lead to disappointment.

Most Important

With such a broad reaching profession, it is up to the homeowner to ask the right questions.

Before even considering calling, get together a list of the things you want done. In the craft we fondly call this the "laundry list" or the "honey-do list"… the latternamed after the plaintiff cry of a needy spouse… "Honey, could you do this… honey, could you do that?"

Though there are many handymen with a tremendous range of ski

lls you can't assume anything. It is important to go over the list with the handyman later in the screening process. Your goal is to decide if this person will do enough of your work to make hiring him worthwhile

Handyman Relationship is a Two-Way Street:

The Washington area Better Business Bureau gets more inquiries about the home remodeling industry than any other.

The industry gets the third most complaints, coming in behind cellphone companies and computer and Internet repair.

Homeowners' top gripes are:

  • work not starting on time.
  • price increases after work has been started.
  • contractors who don't clean up their messes

But for every horror story of a rogue repairman bilking a customer, contractors have an equal number of war stories about former clients.

According to a survey, the top contractor complaints are:

  • customers who want more work without more money.
  • those who make untimely payments.
  • clients who try to renegotiate prices.
  • customers who distract workers by constant conversation.
